Two things you should know about me: I overanalyze everything and I don’t like putting nail holes in my walls unless I’m CERTAIN. I know that last one doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it does when you really want a gallery wall, but aren’t sure if you’ll actually like said gallery wall. So, because of these two things, I really wanted a gallery wall of vintage pictures, but I didn’t do it.
Instead, I gazed at pictures of gallery walls of two of my IG friends and thought about doing it. Until this week. I actually went for it this week. And I’m so happy I did!
If I’m being honest, there’s another reason I didn’t just go for it. When I got into home decor and started my IG account three or so years ago, gallery walls just weren’t the popular thing. Farmhouse style was booming and everyone wanted black and white and clean lines. Pops of color on your wall from vintage portraits just weren’t happening. I tried to do the whole neutral thing because those homes are beautiful, but you know what? I missed color.
And so over the last year or so, I’ve incorporated color and items that “speak” to me and my home has become a place that makes me smile. And I’m currently smiling over my gallery wall. It has pieces that I have collected over the last few months. My favorite is the lady in the red dress playing piano, which I found for less than $5 at a second hand consignment shop!
Alright, so there’s the back story on my gallery wall. Let’s chat a bit about how we did it. It’s a bit complicated to do a gallery wall on a staircase, because the pieces are going up at a slant. I tried laying items out on the floor, but it was difficult to really get a feel for how it’d look actually up on the wall.
I did get one suggestion from an IG friend that was a really great tip. You can trace the dimensions of your pieces on poster board or paper bags and then tape them up on your wall. Really smart idea! Unfortunately, I didn’t see the message until after we were finished…of course! lol
But that’s not what we did. Instead, I picked the piece that was my favorite (the red dress picture) and we placed it on the most prominent place. And then we just worked around it. Not the most precise method, but it’s sort of how my mind works. I’ve got to see the stuff, decide if I like it, and then it can go up if I decide I like it. lol
The funny thing is, some of the pieces I had planned to go up, didn’t make the cut and other pieces that I never intended to go on the wall, ended up finding a place. Isn’t that the way it goes?!?!
We actually have a YouTube video of the entire process and you can check it out here!
If you are wanting a gallery wall, I say go for it! Until next time! From my porch to yours!
XO,
Sharlie
