A little over fifteen years ago, we received our dining room table as a wedding gift from my husband’s parents. We were sorta joking when we added it to our Pier 1 registry, thinking that perhaps we could use the discount to purchase it after the wedding was over. Surely, no one would buy it for us. But his parents did and it was a huge blessing.
I can remember sitting at that table with our oldest daughter when she was just a baby. My husband worked long hours so it was normally just the two of us at dinner time. The six person table seemed ginormous then. I thought that just maybe one day we would have two children and it wouldn’t seem so empty. And, one day, those two children would have friends over and then it would be full! The table would certainly be full during holidays when our children would visit with their spouses and children.
I never imagined that one day our own little family would outgrow our dining room table. But we did have another kiddo. And then another one. And another one. And now I’m pregnant with little Margaret Mae, who will bring our family count to seven. There’s nothing more glorious than a full table! I never dreamed I would want a big family, but there’s nothing like it!
I’m sad to say goodbye to this table. We have eaten many a meals here. We’ve celebrated birthdays and holidays here. We homeschool here. And there are quite a few crayon marks on the surface to prove we’ve colored a great deal of pictures on this table. I still can’t believe our family has outgrown it.
I’m glad our replacement is an old farm table built in the early 1900s. It seems fitting that the replacement would be a table with it’s own memories attached to it. A table that some might would have thrown away, due to its age, but our family will give new life and add our own stories. I can’t wait to share the new table with you all, but for now, I want to just pay tribute to a table that has meant a lot to us this fifteen years.
From our porch to yours,
Sharlie
