I’m calling this blog series (which I’ve been pretty awful at actually writing) The Big Switcheroo. You can read the first part, the why, here. Basically, we decided to move around three of our main living areas: living room, dining room, and study so that our living space would make more sense for us.
AND….I’ve actually written an update to this post where I continue to share my thoughts on moving our dinning room and if I have any regrets (it’s actually changed a lot! lol) and you can check out that post here.
When you walked through our front door, this is what you used to see.
Today, I want to focus on the dining room switch. Our growing family needed a bigger table and a bigger table wasn’t going to fit into our dining space. The only options were: build onto our house (and let’s be honest, that wasn’t really an option) or move the dining table into our living room area and find another spot for our living room. Choice number two it was! But there were was one thing that made the switch feel like it may be sorta weird, unconventional.
Moving the dining room table into that room, would mean when you walk through our front door, you’re basically walking into our dining room. I googled house plans and blogs that perhaps gave proof that this wasn’t as weird as my mind thought it would be, but no such luck. Sure, there were dining rooms off of foyers, but we’re talking about opening the front door and walking straight into a dining room.
This is the new view when you walk through our front door.
I’m glad we went for it anyway because it really works well for our family. After I shared the room switcheroo on Instagram (which is saved on my Story Highlights @thefrontporchfarmhouse if you want to check it out), I had lots of people that have older homes tell me that this is exactly how their house is set up! Considering how I want our new house to have that old farmhouse feel, that seems pretty perfect for us!
This cabinet is where the couch used to sit.Â
We are still looking for the perfect bigger table to put in this space, but it was truly amazing how pieces from other spaces fit so much better in this space. I know there are some out there that may prefer the old view, but this works SO much better for our family. We have so much more space now and I feel like our home has a bit more cozier feel with this new set up. Besides, it’s fun to switch things up every once and awhile…especially when the old way just isn’t working!
Next time, I’ll be sharing the new living room space. 🙂
From my porch to yours,
Sharlie

I love that you changed your space to make it work for your family! It looks absolutely perfect and like it was meant to be!
Thank you so much, Morgan! I’m always so thankful for your encouraging words, friend!
Such a beautiful change! Love it! How nice that your floorpan is so flexible and you can move things around like this. Thank you for linking up with our Link Up party!
I think it looks great, Sharlie. I live in an old house too. There is no foyer and you walk into a big space where we knocked down walls to open up the kitchen to a dining room and family room. Very odd, but it works.
Just wondering without seeing a panoramic view of your ‘new’ dining room, could the table and chairs be moved bit to the left to make more of a walkway? I was thinking that two small chairs be placed in front of the windows next to the pretty cabinet. It might give the room a little more mix than strictly a dining room. 🙂
