Let’s talk about how to create a kitchen nook. Our house was built with an open kitchen and dining area. The space was a little cramped with our dining table for six, but we made it work. But when we found out we were expecting kiddo number five we decided we’d have to make some adjustments, which you can read all about here and here. Basically, we moved our dining room into the largest space in our house to accommodate our growing family.
When we made that switch, it created an amazing little space in our kitchen. The kitchen nook. I think a lot of us would call our kitchen the heart of the home and that’s true for us. With a big family, we spend a LOT of time in the kitchen. It’s also just a happy place for me, a bright and happy room. As I brainstormed what to do with this space, it just made sense to have some chairs in here.
So, guess what I brought into the kitchen? Did you guess that the kitchen nook got a chair? If so, you are right! The kitchen nook got a chair! But I wanted more people to sit in here so I took the one chair out and added an antique settee. But the antique settee, though it was very pretty, wasn’t the most comfy. So I did something crazy. I took the settee out, brought the chair back in, and then took my coffee buffet out to add a chair in that spot.
Whew! Did you catch all of that? Taking the coffee buffet out might be one of the most controversial choices I’ve ever made on my IG stories! So why did I do it? I wanted to have two decent, comfy chairs…one for my husband and me, to sit in the kitchen and be able to chat.
But do you want to know what happened? Our kids would snatch a chair before an adult sat in it. And the one chair that replaced the coffee buffet? Well, Margaret-the-One-Year-Old could climb right up in it and grab everything on the counter.
Guess what came back into the kitchen this weekend? Yep, the coffee buffet. And I’m happy. I missed it. It just fits perfectly in this spot. But you know what else? I’m glad I changed it up for a couple of months and gave the chair a try. It’s good to try new things out in our homes, even if we go back to the way it was in the first place.
I’ve gotta say, I’m really, really happy I didn’t sell the coffee buffet. And because I get asked a lot, my kitchen rug is from Ruggable! I love it. It’s the velcro kind where you can just throw it in the wash! Here’s a link to mine.
